Center to expand healthcare access for students, Frenchtown and West Tallahassee residents

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Friday, Oct. 6, 2023) – Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) announced today it will open a new Urgent Care Center at 410 West Tennessee Street this fall to expand healthcare services to college students, Frenchtown residents and the West Tallahassee community while diverting non-emergency patients away from Emergency Centers.

Urgent Care SketchThe 4,000 square-foot facility, at the corner of West Tennessee Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, is a former optometry office that has been renovated to meet the needs of an urgent care, offering diagnostic services, including labs and X-rays.

“This new urgent care center will help to address the increasing patient demand for immediate healthcare services in Leon County,” said John Streacker, MD, Medical Director of Tallahassee Memorial Urgent Care Centers. “This is especially important for college students, who may only be in town for a few years and don’t have an established primary care provider. Now they’ll have another option for taking care of minor injuries or illnesses that’s close to home."

TMH purchased the land from Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, which is located directly across West Tennessee Street from the new Urgent Care Center.

“It has been our long-term goal to bring a major healthcare partner to the heart of our community,” said Rev. Dr. R.B. Holmes, Jr., pastor of the historic church. “We need this urgent care center to help address healthcare disparities in the marginalized pockets of our inner city, and we applaud TMH for making the decision to open this facility here – close to our universities, close to senior citizen housing and close to many more that need better access to healthcare.”

The new urgent care center will be Tallahassee Memorial’s third for Leon County, with current centers located on the Main Hospital campus at 1541 Medical Drive and in Southwood at 3900 Esplanade Way. In June 2023, TMH also announced plans to open an urgent care center in Crawfordville by summer 2024 to bridge the gap between primary care and emergency care in Wakulla County.

TMH Urgent Care Centers help reduce unnecessary trips to the emergency room for medical issues that can be effectively managed by urgent care. The centers provide a variety of services to address immediate, non-life-threatening conditions like minor cuts or other wounds, earaches, skin rashes or infections, sprains and lingering cold or flu symptoms.

TMH Urgent Care Center on Tennessee Street is scheduled to be open seven days a week from 9 am - 9 pm. Patients can check in online at TMH.org/UrgentCare to reduce wait times. TMH accepts most health insurance providers including Florida Blue and Capital Health Plan (CHP).
