Volunteer Opportunities
Enhancing the comfort of patients and their families through the efforts of volunteers.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH). We depend on volunteers to provide assistance for patients, their families, and hospital staff.
Whether you are a retiree wanting to give back to the community, a student hoping to fulfill volunteer hours for scholarships or experience of an individual with a desire to help others, there is a wide variety of needs and opportunities to help at TMH. While we try to accommodate as many requests as possible, there may be times when we are unable to match an individual to a suitable area of service.
Requirements
Due to the nature of care and for the safety of our patients, all volunteers are carefully screened, processed, and placed in assignments that meet a need established by TMH. This process includes undergoing a criminal background check and drug test, TB (tuberculosis) skin test, COVID vaccination or a COVID exemption form, proof of immunizations, and a volunteer orientation. The screening process may take up to two to three weeks to complete.
Application Process
- Application Form: To become a volunteer at TMH, the first step is to submit a Volunteer Application. If there is a suitable opening, you will be contacted with instructions to complete the security and health screenings outlined below.
- Security Screening: A criminal history check and drug screening will be completed for each volunteer. Fingerprints are also required for access to certain hospital units. Fees may apply.
- Health Screening: A TB skin test, COVID vaccination, and up-to-date immunization information is required for all volunteers.
- Orientation: Upon completion of security and health screenings, volunteers will participate in an online orientation.
- Training: All volunteers will receive training related to their areas of service.
Volunteer Groups and Programs
At Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, we have many volunteer groups and programs that may be right for you.
TMH Auxiliary
Perfect for adult volunteers (men and women) who wish to commit to one four-hour shift per week. Committees include information desk hosts, retail specialists, goodwill ambassadors, fund raising, and special projects. Established in 1949 and over 130 members strong, this dynamic group of volunteers provides over 65,000 hours of service to TMH annually. Social functions and networking are a big part of this volunteer group! Service pins are awarded to Auxiliary volunteers. The application is below for those interested in joining TMH’s Auxiliary.

College Volunteers
TMH has college student volunteers serving many functions in a variety of areas. Some examples include Neurology, Rehabilitation Centers, Child Care Center, Intensive Care Units, Cancer Center, both Emergency Centers, and hospital offices like Human Resources and Accounting. College students should plan to volunteer one three-hour shift per week. Screening fees (a minimum of $60-$80) apply to this program.
The TMH college volunteer program is designed to coincide with a university academic calendar. New students are accepted for the fall and spring semesters. Returning students may volunteer in the summer. During select times the link to the application is below. Keep in mind that completing the application does not guarantee a position.
Due to the ever-changing healthcare environment and changes within our own facilities, it is time to refresh our College Volunteer Program. The manpower hours that this will require, in addition to the number of college student volunteers currently on our campuses, means that we will NOT be accepting additional volunteer applications until the Fall 2025 semester. Please check this website around June 2025 for more information about application deadlines.
We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause.

Animal Therapy Volunteers
The Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Animal Therapy Program is a highly visible and valuable community and regional asset that serves the spectrum of Leon County and the Big Bend. The program’s nationally registered and trained animal therapy volunteer teams visit hospitals, hospices, centers for long-term care, assisted living rehabilitation facilities, and adult day care. Public schools, libraries, bookstores, and even courthouses also benefit from animal therapy team visits. This program requires specific training for both animal and handler.
