Walker Breast Program
The Walker Breast Program is Florida’s longest continuously accredited comprehensive community hospital cancer program and the Big Bend region's only accredited breast program by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The Walker Breast Program provides patients in the Big Bend region personalized, comprehensive and compassionate care for breast health. Offering a wide range of services, patients have access to advanced screenings for preventive care, diagnostics and testing, state-of-the-art treatments, as well as breast health education and support programs, all conveniently located on TMH’s campus.
Breast Clinic
The Walker Breast Program’s new multidisciplinary Breast Clinic, located at the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center, streamlines weeks of appointments into a single visit.
This compressed timeline means patients receive treatment faster by bringing all of the medical experts together in a single location to create an integrated treatment plan customized to each patient’s unique case. The multidisciplinary Breast Clinic is the newest expansion of the Walker Breast Program and brings a care model to Tallahassee that is typically only seen at nationally-recognized cancer hospitals.
What to Expect
Providing our community with an incomparable level of care in a more efficient treatment process, the Breast Clinic brings medical providers together to review each referred case and formulate an individualized plan of care. During the single day appointment, patients meet surgeons and are provided lunch while the multidisciplinary team meets to formulate a plan of care. Patients then meet with providers, who are recommended as part of the patient’s individualized plan of care, during the multidisciplinary team meeting. Delivering a more effective treatment process and streamlining various appointments into one day, allows patients ample access to their medical team for clear communication between providers and patients.
The services offered through the clinic are led by two of TMH’s surgeons, Shelby Blank, MD, Brett M. Howard, MD, and Oncology Administrator, Kathy Brooks, and are supported by a highly skilled team, including registered nurses, dietitians, surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and plastic surgeons. A dedicated nurse navigator also coordinates all aspects of a patient’s care, from the initial Breast Clinic visit and evaluation through treatment and recovery, including follow-up consultations.

Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema is a condition that happens to some cancer patients in which excess fluid collects in tissue and causes swelling in the arm.
While there is no cure for lymphedema, proper treatment can reduce the swelling and return the arm back to normal or near normal size. Secondary lymphedema can be caused by lymph node removal surgery and/or radiation therapy. This is the number one type of lymphedema in the United States.
The best approach is to be educated on what can cause lymphedema as well as the daily management techniques for those who have lymphedema and those who are at risk for developing lymphedema.
