How Do I Become a Patient and Family Advisor?

Step 1: Review & Complete the Application

First, we recommend you review our PFA materials before applying to join the team. To do so, simply call our Patient Experience team at 850-431-5488 and let them know you’re interested in becoming a PFA.

Then, you will fill out our Patient and Family Advisor Application and email the completed application to PatientExperience@TMH.ORG.

Step 2: Screening & Interview

Once our team reviews your application, they will screen you and schedule an interview with our Director of Patient Experience and/or a current PFA. The goal of the interview is to determine your talents and interest areas.

Step 3: Volunteer Services Processing

Once our team notifies Volunteer Services that you are approved to be a PFA, they will contact you with instructions to complete the security and health screenings outlined below:

  • Security Screening: We complete a criminal history check and drug screening for each volunteer. We also require fingerprints for access to certain hospital units. Fees may apply.
  • Health Screening: We require a TB skin test and up-to-date immunization information all volunteers.
  • Orientation: Upon completion of security and health screenings, volunteers will participate in an orientation.

Step 4: Attend Training

Once you complete the Volunteer Services process, you will participate in PFA training, which will cover expectations, our mission and PFA responsibilities. During the one-hour training session, you will receive written materials and a handbook to guide you through the process of being an advisor.

Step 5: Attend a Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) Meeting

As a PFA, you will then begin attending our monthly Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) meetings. Learn more about the Patient and Family Advisory Council.
