Neuropsychology

Our board-certified neuropsychologists use assessment methods to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate individuals with suspected neurological or psychological problems in Leon County and across the Big Bend region.

What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that studies how a person's cognition and behavior are related to the brain and the rest of the nervous system. Neuropsychologists assess patients to learn how their brain is functioning when there is problem with the health of their brain.

What is Neuropsychological Testing?

Neuropsychological testing provides a special opportunity to learn more about yourself.

Testing measures a wide variety of mental abilities that are based on different areas of the brain and their interconnections. The testing can help identify underlying causes of problems, such as:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Inattention
  • Word finding difficulties

How Are You Evaluated?

The process requires you to perform many short tasks, some that may be simple and others that might be more difficult. Testing normally includes a small amount of reading, writing and drawing.

What to Bring to Your Evaluation

Please come prepared with everything you might need for the duration of your testing like reading glasses, hearing aids, snacks and/or lunch, etc. You should come to your testing appointment after eating a meal, feeling well rested and fully alert.

What to Expect During Your Evaluation

  • Your scheduler will inform you of how long you should expect to be tested.
  • If you have a caretaker, they should plan to remain in the clinic waiting area throughout your entire testing session.
  • It will be important for you to give your best effort across all tests. Your best effort is required to get a clear profile of your brain-based abilities. This information can help us to help you.
  • Upon completion, your test scores are interpreted, and a report is written. Your results and recommendations are the reviewed by your doctor and shared with you in person or over the phone.
