Stroke Treatment
TMH is recognized by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. As a Primary Stroke Center, our quality of care meets the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. TMH is home to a comprehensive neurovascular lab to treat strokes through arteries in your brain.
What is a Stroke?
Stroke is a very serious medical emergency that occurs when blood flow is cut off to an area of the brain – a literal “brain attack.” Without blood flow, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. This means abilities controlled by those areas of the brain, such as memory and muscle control, are lost.
Stroke can happen to anyone at any time. If you think someone is having a stroke, call 911 immediately.
How to Recognize a Stroke
When a stroke happens, you don’t have time to waste – you’ll want to call 911 and go straight to our Bixler Trauma & Emergency Center for the most advanced care. We offer a variety of revolutionary treatments for strokes, including tPA, a clot-busting intravenous medication, and endovascular neurosurgery, which removes blood clots and repairs aneurysms without opening the skull.
Support Services
Having a stroke does not have to mean lifelong disability if quality care is administered quickly. We provide rapid diagnosis, innovative care, rehabilitation and dedicated support for our patients in Leon County and beyond.
Stroke Research
At Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, we’re invested in using clinical research to help improve treatment options for our patients, including those who’ve experienced strokes. TMH has an active research program and collaborates with partners like Tallahassee Neurological Clinic to improve medical care for the patients we serve. You can find more information about clinical trials we’re involved in at www.clinicaltrials.gov.
