Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
We are proud to perform more transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) to treat aortic stenosis than any other heart and vascular program in Northwest Florida. Using TAVR, our Structural Heart Team fixes your aortic valve without ever having to open your chest.
What is Aortic Stenosis?
Aortic stenosis is a condition in which your heart’s aortic valve – the main valve connecting your heart to the rest of your body – narrows. As your aortic valve narrows, the harder it becomes for your heart to pump blood to the rest of your body.
If you have aortic stenosis, you may experience:
- Shortness of breath, even at rest
- Chest pain or tightness
- Fainting (also called syncope)
- Extreme fatigue
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
What is TAVR?
TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that allows us to replace your aortic valve while your heart is still beating, and without ever having to open your chest.
Performed in our Cardiac Cath Lab by our Structural Heart Team, TAVR uses a catheter to deliver a new prosthetic valve to your heart through a tiny incision in your groin. Once the valve is perfectly positioned, it is opened, effectively replacing your diseased valve.
Patients typically feel immediate relief of symptoms, require just one overnight stay in the hospital and have quick recoveries.
Who is Eligible for TAVR?
TAVR is available for patients who have severe and symptomatic aortic stenosis but are considered intermediate or high risk for surgery. If you think you may be eligible, please discuss with your primary care physician.
How to Get a Referral
To determine if TAVR is the right fit for you, we'd first like to see you in our Valve Clinic at TMH Physician Partners, Services by Southern Medical Group. You’ll need a referral to the clinic from your primary care provider or cardiologist.
