Parkinsons and Movement Disorders Treatment

Contact Us
Treating patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders requires a multidisciplinary team that can create tailored care plans with a variety of treatment options. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare has developed the Big Bend region’s first and most comprehensive program that blends unparalleled medical expertise with patient-focused support and navigation.

Individualized Treatment Options

If you or a loved one is diagnosed with a movement disorder, such as Parkinson’s or Huntington’s Disease, our team of experts create an individualized plan of care, and offer a variety of treatments and services, including:

  • Ongoing neurological care and treatment
  • Nutrition and exercise recommendations
  • Comprehensive therapies (physical, occupational and speech)
  • Medication and lifestyle management
  • Support groups and educational resources
  • Surgical patient support through our Deep Brain Stimulation Navigator
  • Skin biopsies for alpha-synucleinopathies
  • Neuropsychological evaluation

Deep Brain Stimulation

When medication is no longer effective to manage your movement disorder, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may be an option. Through a minimally invasive procedure, DBS delivers a continuous electrical current to a specific area of the brain that controls the area affected by the movement disorder.

Working with our multidisciplinary movement disorders team, patients who are potential candidates for DBS will undergo a specific testing protocol to determine their eligibility.

DBS is used to relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia and epilepsy. DBS is remarkably well-studied and has demonstrated excellent results with long-term success.

Support Groups

Our team knows how difficult it can be for patients with movement disorders and their loved ones. Currently, we offer support groups for patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The group is free to attend, and registration is suggested but not required.

Parkinsonism Multidisciplinary Team Clinic

The Parkinsonism Multidisciplinary Team Clinic is hosted by TMH Physician Partners – Neurology every month.

Current patients with atypical parkinsonism – a group of progressive brain disorders that are more serious early on and progress quicker than Parkinson’s disease – are seen by our team, including:

  • Deep brain stimulation navigator
  • Movement disorder neurologist
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Physical therapist
  • Rehabilitation clinical coordinator
  • Social workers
  • Speech therapist

The clinic's goal is to make it easier for patients to seek comprehensive care by bringing each specialist together for patients to visit, as opposed to scheduling various appointments individually.
