PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL Program
This residency is a combined (2 year) PGY-1 and PGY-2 in Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL). The PGY-1 curriculum closely follows that of the PGY-1 residency program (see PGY-1 program description). The PGY-2 year is constructed in 8-week blocks with overlapping longitudinal rotations to provide the resident with an enriching experience working closely with the assistant directors, pharmacy managers, the director of pharmacy, and executives in the organization.
HSPAL Program Structure:
I. Orientation (4 weeks)
II. Required rotations (8 weeks)
- Financial Planning
- Ambulatory Care Administration
- Clinical Pharmacy Administration
- Supply Chain/Procurement (4 weeks)
- Pharmacy Operations
III. Electives (4-6 weeks)
- Pharmacy Consultant Management
- PGY-1 rotations may be chosen as electives
IV. Transition Period: 3 - 4 weeks (or multiple 1-week blocks)
V. Longitudinal Rotations/Projects
- Staffing (every 4th weekend as pharmacist in charge)
- QI/Research project presented at Vizient Clinical conference/ASHP Midyear
- Patient Safety (Medication Safety, Anticoagulation, Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee attendance)
- Formulary Management (MUE, lead P&T Committee meeting)
- Administrative Projects (Clinical cost savings initiative, Nursing education, Regulatory compliance)
- Administrative Opportunities (Shadowing C-Suite executives, ASHP PAL Resident Collaborative Committee)
